WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. A random additional substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less important for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item upgrader kit used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and is accessible at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks, to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item upgrader kit from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that can be used to level up weapons tools, armor, and other items. They are purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be used on any weapon or Item level Upgrade tool using a button, which will display an image of the item at its next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the Item Level upgrade and the current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Upgraders for items can be found in many places including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases according to the number of items being upgraded, and can be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only accessible via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit and an issue.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. After a player has upgraded to a certain level of item for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item level upgrade level will cost less. This is even if the items come from another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is available across all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players achieve certain achievement milestones.

Crests

Players have a number of options when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in 4 ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be spent on equipment that is of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade path. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade requires up to 20 crests, depending on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons with any difficulty for higher-tier items or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult, but the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. When a piece has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one usage, so it's important to use them properly. It is recommended to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the best gear you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to take advantage of the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
